Progress has slowed.
Cynicism and defeatism grip the world.
Choices appear limited to mind viruses and demagogues.
Institutions have failed and insist on digging themselves deeper.

Yet,

There is a universe to explore.
There are billions of humans whom you could befriend.
There is good to do in the world for our neighbors.
There is joy to find along the road of discovery and invention.

Debate and, frankly, conflict, are part of the intellectual process.
However, while new ideas often oppose existing ones,
the world is not a zero sum game or a linear tug-of-war.
